2026 Bursary nominations open soon

Q Shelter members will shortly be able to apply for a share of this year’s $7,000 Deirdre Coghlan Bursary Award for training and professional development activities.

Examples of how previous recipients have used the bursary include:

  • Increasing staff capacity and skill set through qualifications; e.g. first aid and mental health support courses, short courses and TAFE certificates, updates to legislation impacting the sector, and up-skilling in communication practices and software
  • Attending relevant conferences and forums to increase knowledge of sector issues, expand professional networks and promote the organisation to stakeholders.

We encourage you to look over the application form when it’s available before submitting, as applications do require some time to fully complete, and we encourage you to add as much detail as possible to improve your chances of selection. The link will be available below shortly on this page to view or start your application, which you can save and submit at a later date.

Nominations will close Friday 2 October.

Background

Since 2016, Q Shelter has awarded a bursary in the name of Deirdre Coghlan, a founding and life member of Q Shelter. Deirdre was known to many Queenslanders as a champion of social housing and as an outstanding community development worker.

Deirdre contributed significantly to the founding of Bric Housing, through a collaboration involving four community housing providers. In her later years, Deirdre was also a proud tenant of Bric Housing and famously achieved an amazing level of community development with other social housing tenants in Redcliffe. She loved her role and the difference it made.

The bursaries, currently totalling $7,000 per annum, fund professional development activities for Q Shelter members who work or volunteer in the affordable housing and homelessness sector. Q Shelter has distributed $44,000 in bursary payments since 2017.
