Community Housing Providers and faith-based organisations in Queensland can now partner to deliver much-needed housing, faster.

Legislative changes by the Queensland Government in late 2024 to the state planning framework now allow Community Housing Providers (CHPs) to establish community and affordable housing projects on under-used land owned by faith-based and community organisations. These changes include extending the types of development that can occur on Community Facilities Zoned land, including land owned by faith-based groups, and using the streamlined Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) state approval pathway for projects.

To explore the opportunities and help explain the process, in mid-2025 Q Shelter produced this video featuring a panel of leaders from across the sector, who are at various stages of these partnerships. This video aims to provide insight into the process, the impact and benefits for organisations and the community, and offer tips and advice.

We encourage all Queensland CHPs to explore this new opportunity to deliver more community and social housing projects across the state. We invite you to watch the video, share it with your colleagues, and visit the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning website for more information. You can also email the Q Shelter Policy and Strategic Engagement team to discuss any aspects of the new legislation and assist with potential partnership opportunities.

Thank you to our expert panel for their involvement and contributions to this video:
