As a significant percentage of housing and homelessness support services users are from marginalised and vulnerable populations, it is crucial organisations and individuals create a safe space where everyone feels respected. Using inclusive, person-centred language plays a major role in ensuring people feel respected and included.
Q Shelter has developed a Language Guide to assist the housing and homelessness sector in using inclusive, person-centred language in all interactions, particularly with people seeking support.
Q Shelter Language Guide – April 2025
Published by Q Shelter’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion working group, this guide has been developed in collaboration and consultation with various other organisations, including First Nations consultancy group Krueger Consultancy Services (KCS), the Queenslanders with Disability Network, and the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity & Health. Additionally, it references external resources from the Australian Human Rights Commission, People With Disability Australia, and more.
In addition to advice on inclusive language, the guide also includes a handy glossary of acronyms commonly used in the housing and homelessness sector.
